The latest peace plan with Bashar al-Assad is the latest desperate effort by Assad to appease the international community so he can continue ordering men, women, and children be executed and tortured so he can hold back his critics from taking action against him. Making peace with Assad at this stage is an evil in itself, cheapens the dignity of human life, and will ensure such tyrants in the future will engage in genocide and torture of humanity knowing the world will sit on their hands and do little more then give them a slap on the wrist. When one of our own is murdered, tortured, or mistreated many desire quick and certain justice but when it is happening to thousands of our fellow humanity halfway across the world most act hardly bothered by it at all. Many act as if there is nothing we can and should do, that the desire for peace outweighs the desire for stopping mass human rights abuses, and that somehow we have no ethical and moral duty to get involved to try and stop human rights abuses from happening. People act as if men like Assad can be reasoned with. You can not reason with violent madness. You can not use diplomacy when dealing with cruel and heartless men. You can not let the murder and tortures of thousands including women and children go unpunished.
This is not about hatred or vengeance against Assad, this is about the dignity of human life, justice, and standing up for human rights. If the world is ever to ensure mass human rights abuses like genocide become rare it must do things in the future to prevent it from occurring, doing urgent and effective things to stop it from occurring when it does, and hold those to full account who are engaged in those atrocities. Imagine how things could have been different if the world acted collectively and with urgency to stop Adolph Hitler or Joseph Stalin in the 1930's from committing mass human rights abuses. Imagine if the German people as a whole stood up to Hitler rather then allow themselves to be enticed by him and become subjects to, imagine if the Russians had a counter revolution when Stalin came on board and overthrew him from power, imagine if the world acted sooner. Millions could have been saved, many children would have had the opportunity to live a full and happy life, so much torture, slavery, cruelty, hardship, starvation, sickness, and absolute despair could have been avoided. Lets not repeat the sins of the past rather lets learn from it and become better because of it. Lets not let the millions who died in such times and those who have died in modern times be forgotten . Lets not let those suffering under human rights abuses suffer alone. Let's not be fearful, cynical, apathetic, disheartened, hardhearted, ignorant, foolish, unrealistic, cowardly, selfish, and forgetful.
We must deal with the cruelties and realities of the world not some fanciful notion of the world. We must learn the truth no matter how painful and ugly that truth may be. We must be prepared at times to make sacrifices for the good of our fellow humanity. We must not avoid painful things and decisions because to do so is to ensure continuing suffering. We must not act like we our an island and live on one one rather we should see how interdependent we our on each other and how interconnected the world is. We must not repeat the sins and mistakes of the past or we are sure to suffer similar fates as the past. We must not think that conflict is always avoidable and must come to realize sometimes conflict is necessary to prevent much worse tragedies. We must stand up for human rights, human dignity, and human liberty. We must learn to value the other and love them as our fellow humanity. We must do things to prevent mass human tragedy and be willing to bear the cost and be willing to make sacrifices to stop current tragedies if we ever hop to end them. We can not act like children and pretend that if we close our eyes that it will go away. We can not act like we can avoid making sacrifices. We can not act like nothing ever happened if this bloodshed does end. We can not stand idle no longer. We can not allow delay not a moment longer. We can not hope to long survive as the human race if we do not start getting serious about human rights, human dignity, and human liberty.
