PHOENIX — Former Democratic state Sen. Kyrsten Sinema has been elected to represent a new Phoenix-area congressional district, emerging victorious after a bitterly fought race that featured millions of dollars in attack ads.
Sinema becomes the first openly bisexual member of Congress. Her victory came in a year when three states approved gay marriage, and at least five openly gay Democrats were elected to House seats. A Wisconsin congresswoman also became the first openly gay person elected to the Senate.
Sinema had a narrow lead on election night that made the race too close to call. But she slowly improved that advantage as more ballots were tallied in recent days, and now has a nearly 6,000-vote edge that is too much for Republican Vernon Parker to overcome.
Sinema, 36, said Monday she was “honored and ready to start working for the people of Arizona.”

It's Official Kyrsten Sinema has won here in my district, AZ's newly created 9th Congressional District. I have been a supporter of hers since she began her career in Arizona politics. Some said she was too Progressive to win in this district. Some even claim she is a socialist, a few claim she is a communist. She is neither a socialist or a communist just a Progressive who cares about the average poor and middle class man, woman, and child in this country. If that makes one a communist I guess you have to count me as a communist too. This is too all the closeted "socialist" and "communist" who voted for Kyrsten Sinema ;-), thank you for supporting Kyrsten Sinema. I say that in jest of course making fun of the Tea Party attack ads thrown at her. Kyrsten the Prada Socialist who hates stay at home moms leaching off their boyfriends showed them a thing or two LOL!!! Kyrsten the "far out" Liberal won, take that you Tea Party buffoons! I am getting ready for Kyrsten's Manifesto to the congress. Okay enough of the leftist jokes already ;-),
I am so happy Kyrsten Sinema won I could shout from the rooftops. It is so nice finally to have a fellow Progressive voice represent this area in West Mesa, Tempe, and Phoenix. I don't know why the article makes such a big deal about her being bisexual, who cares really. Have not we got passed that point in this culture already. I mean really I don't care which way she swings as long as she swings left politically. She is compassionate, intelligent, and committed to Progress. She got my vote and will get my vote whenever she runs again. This district will be in good hands with Kyrsten Sinema representing it. To all still worried she is too extreme don't be she is actually quite pragmatic and has proven ability to work with conservatives and moderates as well as Progressives. She is the best thing to happen to West Mesa in a long time. Normally it sucks being on the west side of Mesa of mostly run down working class and lower middle class neighbourhoods but things in west Mesa with Mesa's Moderate Republican Mayor Scott Smith and now Kyrsten Sinema are beginning to finally look up!
