This article will not be one that is easy to read due to the graphic subject matter but I felt it essential for it be written:
In Syria what is happening is so disturbing, shocking, and appalling many do not want to even hear about it. They turn off the news when a story about Syria comes on because they are so cynical and can't seem to relate to people thousands of miles away. They skip over articles in newspapers and magazines about Syria because they don't see it as relevant to their lives. If someone mentions it to them they will say something like "yes it is terrible what is happening in Syria", but they usually end the conversation there. You see when we are so caught up in our own lives, dealing with domestic affairs, so busy at work and home, or simply too zoned out in leisurely pursuits like watching television, a sporting event, or browsing the internet we seem to forget about the wider world all around us. We become so self-absorbed and devoted to the pleasures in life that we have trouble sometimes thinking of those in this country and around the world who do not have such a privilege. We feel sorry for them when we think of their suffering but were not selfless enough to try to help. Again our own lives and pleasure are paramount to most of us rather we care to admit it or not. In other words were often selfish, and if we would just devote a little time to advocating for those suffering we would help people and feel good about doing it. That is what I am asking people to do about Syria just write an article or two, do research and share it with friends, write to your congressional official, write an op-ed, call in a news show or radio program, if your creative make a video on YouTube, a picture, poem, or an art project; anything as long as you do something you will be helping advocate for the people of Syria.
There is reasons why I am calling on people to do this. I know I'm not a celebrity or important political figure so perhaps I can't motivate you much, but that's not what should motivate a person to get involved it is altruism that should motivate people. The reason I'm calling for this is everyday unspeakable crimes are happening in Syria, most the media never cover. They are the crimes too shocking, depraved, and appalling for the mainstream news outlets to do stories on. If they do cover those crimes they just give a brief mention and occasionally a censored photo or video of the aftermath of the crime. Most crimes happen in Syria far away from camera's and international witnesses, behind prison walls, and various places throughout Syria where only the inhabitants of those places and victims know what happened. They are the type of crimes not easy to talk about, the ones not considered polite to speak of, the ones the victims feel undeservedly guilty and ashamed of though they did nothing wrong. They are the type of crimes where few dry eyes would exist after hearing how much the poor victim had to endure. They are the type of crimes that bring about desires for revenge and retribution. They are the type of crimes most never speak of and live in their own private hell unable to forget what happened to them. They are the type of crimes that drive people to alcoholism and other addictions. Tragically some men, women, and children have endured so much that they die from their injuries. Some die by their own neglect of their basic needs because their heart and soul is broken. Some die by their own hands unable to cope with the physical or emotional pain any longer. All though suffer with terrible wounds both seen and unseen, both physical and emotional.
The crimes of Bashar al-Assad and his regime are ruthlessly savage, inhumanly cruel, and shockingly depraved. Every human rights abuse, man is capable of, has been inflicted upon the Syrian people in one form or another. They have been not just inflicted on rebel fighters and other men, but women, young men and women, even children, toddlers, and infants. I mean this regime tortures, rapes, and butchers people from the very young to the very old. No life is sacred to this regime even a young boys life they took after capturing him in state custody for protesting against the regime. What they did to this poor kid was monstrous. His injuries of his lifeless body were said to have medically shown they beat him, pulled out his fingernails, burned him with cigarets, broke his bones, cut him with knives, cut off his genitals, sodomized him, and bludgeoned him to death. Another case Assad's thugs stormed a house to find a woman and her son. They captured the boy and in front of his mother threatened to kill him not once but twice by holding a gun to his head. Then they took the mother's head scarf off and took her into one of the bedrooms where she was raped by all five of the men. In another situation a father was shot at point blank range right in front of his young son on their way to a market. One case a group of young women and girls on the way to an event were captured by Assad's thugs taken to state headquarters where they were sexually abused and raped. One ten year old boy reported to the media he saw a six year old boy die from his injuries three days later after having been severely injured by Assad's brutal thugs. In some Massacres carried out by the Assad regime, Hezbollah, and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in Syria, women and young children were found hacked and shot to death so badly their bodies were badly disfigured. There has been so many horrific cases more horrible then one could imagine. Imagine the last cries of the victims translated as "Please Don't Hurt Me" before their lives are snuffed out, it makes one heartsick even thinking about it, those poor people especially those that are only children. It is Absolutely evil what these men have done.
My heart breaks for all these people especially for the children suffering through these terrible crimes. No one deserves this kind of treatment inflicted on the Syrian people; even the lowliest of criminals don't deserve to be treated like these people have been treated. I keep asking myself how could so many be so cruel? These thugs who did these crimes are the lowliest of the low, the scum scraped off the bottom of the sewers, so savage and depraved it is hard to remember their humanity at times. These brutal and vicious thugs need to placed in prison for the rest of their pathetic lives never allowed to hurt anyone again. I know many would just assume they be executed, but I believe in order to truly defend human rights this includes defending the human rights of even absolutely despicable human beings like those who committed these savage crimes. Men and women who commit such horrible crimes have to be deeply disturbed and mentally ill, else how could they go through with such crimes. A normal healthy and empathetic person if they even thought about such at all, would feel guilty for even thinking about committing such terrible crimes. These men though have not only carried out such crimes but have done so on a routine basis and without any remorse or feelings of guilt whatsoever. In other words they are serial tortures, serial child abusers, serial rapist, and serial killers without a conscience. They are sociopaths handpicked by Assad to do his dirty work. Where does this guy find so many brutal thugs? What did he go to all the prisons in Syria and ask for the most sadistic and deranged men available? The most ruthless mafia bosses seem like humanitarians compared to these guys even. Bashar is in the same class of human beings as Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Attila The Hun, Caligula, and Nero.
We need to do something to stop the crimes against humanity occurring in Syria. This sitting on the sidelines and waiting for Assad and those at the highest level of his regime to develop a conscience and surrender is like a free ticket to commit mass murder and get away with it. The most disturbing thing about this regime is it has been targeting children since the very beginning of this conflict. In fact what set Bashar off is young men and boys painting graffiti and protesting saying how bad a leader Bashar was. Not only did the Syrian police and government officials harass these boys and young men, they jailed them and tortured many of them. Some were raped by the regime and a few of them were killed. When they went to try to pick up their sons some fathers reported being told "forget about having these children go and make new ones and if your not men enough to make more children bring us your wives and we will make children for you". Look at massacres like Houla were women and young children were hacked to pieces with swords and knives, bludgeoned, and shot with automatic weapons. These guys don't just torture, rape, and kill; men, women, and children to make people afraid, they seem to enjoy doing it. These blood thirsty savages seem to do it for sport. All of this is not made up propaganda this is what Assad regime has been doing and they must be stopped right now. The people of Syria can not afford the world to stand idle any longer it's time we get involved. We need to help save the Syrian people from being massacred and bring these vicious men and a few women to justice. Time is one thing the Syrian people don't have too much of. Act Today, Get Involved, Be An Advocate For The People of Syria. The Syrian men, women, and children are depending on our support, are we going to be there for them?
