Big Brother Is Watching You!
The United States Government is becoming increasingly more authoritarian and is spying on American Citizens more then ever before. With advances in technology has come more opportunities for freedom then ever before but also more threats to freedom then ever before. I realize such a statement seems paradoxical but this is in fact what is happening. As democracy and freedom increases Big Brother feels threatened and so pushes back. Since 9/11 there has been a threat to civil liberties that is unparalleled in American history. Most do not realize how much ground has been lost on civil liberties, how much government power has expanded, and how truly under threat our Constitution is.
If powerful people in government wanted to create an authoritarian state in this country they know from past examples in history that the best way to do so is to take advantage of crises or manufacture them. They would know if they were to take away liberties and gain more authority without such crises the people would rebel. They also know if to take our liberties all away at once and increase their authority to be absolute the people would rebel so they do so slowly over time. It's like the parable about boiling a frog to death if you were to put a frog in boiling water he would immediately jump out but if were to place a frog in cool water and very slowly heat it up he would stay in the water and be boiled alive. Inch by inch, law by law, government action after government action we are loosing our liberty and the government is increasing it's authority over us at the same time.
Many people have bought into the rhetoric that the government is doing such for our benefit, that we live in such a dangerous world such is necessary, that if we are doing nothing wrong we have nothing to fear, that they will be mindful of civil liberties and uphold the Constitution, that we should trust them. History has proven that the government can never be fully trusted and the people can never let their guard down on defending liberty. Consider liberty is very hard to get, even harder to maintain, and once it is taken away it is very hard to ever get back. Consider also legislation is much harder to repeal then to enact. Finally consider all the historical examples of unintended consequences of government legislation and actions. We should be guardians of our liberty just as much as we guard our life. For life without liberty is not much of a life at all.
